Program Description

The Intensive English Program (IEP) at Western Washington University provides a variety of English language courses designed to prepare international students for academic study at American colleges and universities. IEP classes, which are mostly noncredit, focus on preparing students for academic experiences, as well as helping them to adapt socially and culturally to living in the U.S. The 6–level program offers students 20 contact hours of English weekly over 10-week sessions along with cultural outings, service-learning, and experiential learning opportunities. The core curriculum is accredited by the Commission on English Language Accreditation (CEA), recognized) by the independent consortium of University and College-Administered Intensive English Programs (UCIEP, and a member of the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). The IEP ties into the Global Pathway Programs at Level 4, which provides students with an opportunity to continue their English language studies while also taking academic courses for credit, which allows students a leg-up on their degree study.

Located in Bellingham, Washington, a stunning natural setting between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., Western Washington University is a nationally recognized, innovative, challenging and student-centered public university. Western offers a diverse, multicultural learning environment, and a strong sense of community.

Program Description

Founded in 1981, WESLI has been teaching English for over 35 years in downtown Madison, Wisconsin.  During this time, WESLI has earned an excellent reputation with universities, educational agencies, companies, and students from all over the world.  With around 120 students at any given time, WESLI is committed to preparing students to be collaborative leaders in their chosen academic and professional environments.  WESLI accomplishes this mission through exceptional ESL Instruction and Student Services; guided by the following principles as applied to all areas of the organization, staff and students alike: cultural competency, critical thinking, and collaboration.

WESLI’s Academic Preparation program prepares students to not only gain acceptance to universities and partners around the US, but also to succeed during their university study.  In addition to academic language, the curriculum focuses on the study skills and critical thinking, necessary to succeed in a US university environment.

In partnership with over 30 universities and colleges, WESLI offers a pathway for students to enter university without needing to take a TOEFL or IELTS exam, through its TOEFL Waiver Program. Throughout its history, WESLI has prepared more than 15,000 students from 50+ countries to succeed in competitive academic and corporate environments.  WESLI has achieved this by offering 7 levels of English instruction, from beginning to advanced levels of English, in the areas of General English & American Culture, Business English, Academic Preparation and Test Preparation.  Students can apply year-round and start dates are offered every month, allowing students to begin their academic journey as soon as possible.
